Taking Care of Your Newborn Baby: Simple Tips for New Parents
Hello, I am Dr. Mayur Kumar Goyal. I am a child doctor. I help new parents take care of their babies every day.
I know having a new baby can feel scary. You might have many questions. That's normal! Today, I will share simple tips for newborn care.
1. First Few Days with Your Baby
Your baby is new to this world. Here's what you might see:
- Sleep: Babies sleep most of the time. They wake up every few hours for feeding.
- Umbilical Cord: Keep the belly button area clean and dry. It will fall off in 1-2 weeks.
- Dirty Diapers: First poops are black and sticky. Later, they become yellow and soft. Learn more about newborn poop colors.
- Crying: Baby cries when hungry, wet, or wants to be held. Learn how to decode your baby's cry.
2. Feeding Your Baby
- Breastfeeding: Feed every 2-3 hours. Make sure baby latches properly.
- Formula Milk: If using formula, make it exactly as written on the pack. Keep bottles clean.
- Burping: After feeding, pat baby's back gently until they burp. This helps remove gas.
- Wondering if your baby is getting enough food? Check our feeding guide.
3. Sleep Time
- Safe Sleep: Always put baby to sleep on their back.
- Bed: Use a firm mattress. No pillows, soft toys, or heavy blankets.
- Your Room: Keep baby's bed in your room for first 6 months.
- Learn about ideal room temperature for newborns.
4. Bath and Skin Care
- Bathing: Give only sponge baths until the umbilical cord falls off. See our first bath guide.
- Water: Use warm water. Check with your elbow - it should not feel too hot.
- Soap: Use very mild, baby soap. Don't use too much.
- Dry Well: Gently pat baby dry with soft towel.
- Dealing with diaper rash? We can help.
5. When to Call Doctor
Call your doctor if you see:
- Fever (more than 100.4°F)
- Baby not feeding well
- No wet diapers for 6-8 hours
- Skin or eyes looking yellow
- Baby too sleepy or crying too much
- Breathing problems
Don't wait if you feel something is wrong. It's better to ask your doctor. For urgent concerns, visit our pediatric emergency services.
